In this episode, we will explore the first Ecumenical Council to be held in the West, and actually in the cathedral of the Popes: the First Lateran Council. Before doing so, however, we discuss the terms “lay investiture” and “simony” to better understand what the controversy is that this council will resolve.
We will also discuss the conflicts between Emperors Henry IV and V with each other and with Pope St. Gregory VII and the Concordat of Worms which ends up being ratified by this Council, which only lasted three days.
We also discuss the martyrdom of St. Thomas a Becket, who provides a poignant coda to these new difficulties between an intertwined Church and State.
A special note of thanks to Nicholas Wilton for allowing us the use his music for this series. You can find out more about Mr. Wilton and his beautiful compositions here.
