The Holy Rosary
With October upon us again, we encourage our readership to benefit from the October Rosary Devotions. The devotions can be summarised as follows:
- In an Encyclical of September 1, 1883, Pope Leo XIII commanded the Rosary Devotion to be done in all parish churches from October 1st to November 2nd inclusive.
A partial indulgence of seven years and seven times forty days can be gained each time by all those who during the period designated shall take part in the public recitation of the Rosary. The same indulgence may be gained by those who, prevented by a lawful reason from being present, shall say five decades of the
Rosary privately. - A Plenary Indulgence is granted on the Feast of the Most Holy Rosary (Oct. 7th) or on any day during the Octave to those who on the Feast and daily during the Octave shall recite five decades of the Rosary, provided they confess, receive Holy Communion, visit the church, and pray for the the intentions of the Holy Father.
[The intentions of the Holy Father can be prayed for even during the vacancy of the Roman See, since they are the following: (1) the extirpation of heresy; (2) the propagation of the Faith; (3) the alleviation of the sufferings of the poor.] - A Plenary Indulgence is granted on the day of one’s choice to those who after the Octave of the Feast shall recite at least ten times during the month of October five decades of the Rosary, and fulfill the usual conditions given above.
- Furthermore, Pope Pius XI in 1927 granted a Plenary Indulgence to anyone who recites five decades of the Rosary in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament publicly exposed or even reserved in the tabernacle, provided that they fulfill the condition of confession and Holy Communion either eight days before or eight days after the recitation of the Rosary before the Blessed Sacrament.
We highly recommend you listen to the sermon given by Fr. Eldracher, of Mary Help of Christians Chapel in Australia, this past Sunday in which he explains the value of this devotion at length, and exhorts all to the devout recitation of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
